Biografia

Cellist, composer and teacher

He received the first cello lessons from his father, who was Kapellmeister at Basilica de la Mercè. In 1907, he moved to Paris to study with Pau Casals, and studied composition with Maurice Ravel. In 1914 he returned to Barcelona, and in 1919 he began an intense artistic career that led him to perform with Artur Rubinstein and to form a trio with Yehudi Menuhin and Louis Kentner.
Compositions such as his Cello Concerto (1926) have the imprint of musicians such as Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel. In 1930 he settled in Florence and from 1946 he taught at the Chigiana Musical Academy of Siena. From 1958 he also taught at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne.
