He began his studies at Orfeó Català and, later, at the Municipal Music School of Barcelona with Millet and Morera. He continued his studies in Paris at the Schola Cantorum with Vincent d'Indy and Albert Roussel. There, he met Robert Gerhard and joined the Spanish consulate in Le Havre. In 1936, he returned to Catalonia to fight for the Republican government. He returned to Le Havre where he devoted himself to composition, which had ties to French music and some influences from traditional Catalan music. He also used serialist language in his compositions. His output inludes Concert per a quartet de corda i orquestra (1931), with which he won the Edward Garret Mac Collin Prize in Philadelphia. He composed numerous songs based on poems by Catalan authors.
