Biografia

Guitarist, composer and pedagogue

He began his music studies in Barcelona under Josep Rodoreda, Joan Baptista Pujol and Josep Brocà. He gave guitar concerts in Barcelona, Zaragoza, Bilbao and Paris. He later managed a guitar and bandurria quartet formed by Beltrán, Hernández and Cateura, with whom he performed in Girona and northern Catalonia.

In the late 1870s, the quartet turned into a quintet and it debuted in Paris and gave recitals in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, Brussels, Prague, Nice and Monte Carlo. Mas i Bargalló founded other ensembles such as the Lira Barcelonesa and the Lira Espanyola, with which he performed by the turn of the century.

In 1894 he was appointed professor of guitar and plucked instruments at the Escola Municipal de Música de Barcelona, a position he held until his retirement in 1922. He taught Joan Nogués and Alfred Romea. His compositions include transcriptions and études for plucked strings ensemble, piano music, the habanera En un guateque for guitar, as well as tangos and xotis.
